Sergeant First Class Levester "Lee" Williams, United States Army, Retired, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 17, 2025, at 6:17 PM, following an extended illness. He was 73 years old. Lee spent his final days under the compassionate care of the Esther House Center for Hospice Care in Elkhart, surrounded by love and comfort.

Born on May 30, 1951, in Blytheville, Arkansas, Lee was one of thirteen children blessed to the late Matthew Williams, Sr. and Ruthie Mae Williams Childress of Elkhart. His family recalls his boundless energy and the enduring bond he shared with his twin brother, Sylvester. Lee's earthly journey now reunites him with his father, his brothers Matthew Williams, Jr., Andrew "Andy" Williams, and Sylvester Williams, as well as his sister, Rebecca Williams, who preceded him in death.

Lee's memory lives on through his devoted sons, Levester Williams, Jr. of Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and Kevin Williams of Topeka, Kansas. He is also survived by his loving siblings: brothers Harold (Pearlie) Williams and George (Joyce) Williams of Elkhart; and sisters Ora House, Ollie Williams, Alice Warren, and Earline (Lewis) Childress, all of Elkhart, as well as Annie House and Catharine (Cecil)Taylor of Crestview, Florida. Additionally, Lee's legacy is carried forward by countless nieces, nephews, extended family, cherished friends, and a lifelong brotherhood of Army comrades.

Lee was a proud alumnus of Jimtown High School, where he was affectionately known as "Bear Two," playing alongside his twin brother Sly, "Bear One" on the football field. Together, they made an indelible mark as stars on the Jimtown Jimmies football team and as skilled wrestlers. Their camaraderie and grit contributed to the school's athletic success and solidified their place in the hearts of teammates and fans alike.

After graduating in 1970, Lee chose to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army. Over the next 20 years, he distinguished himself in service, earning the respect of his peers and rising to the rank of Sergeant First Class. His assignments took him to various posts around the globe, where his leadership, discipline, and dedication left a lasting impact on those he led and served alongside. Lee retired honorably from the Army in 1990, carrying with him a legacy of valor and service.

Upon returning to Elkhart, Lee transitioned to civilian life with the same determination and sense of duty that defined his military career. He worked as a security guard and a substitute teacher, bringing his steady guidance and warmth to those around him. A man of deep faith, Lee became an active member of Willowdale Church of Christ, where his kindness and devotion enriched the lives of many.

A celebration of Lee's life will take place on Friday, January 31, 2025, at the Willowdale Church of Christ, 1400 Willowdale Avenue, Elkhart. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM, with services following at 12:00 noon, officiated by Pastor Mike Scholten. Lee will be laid to rest with full military honors provided by the United States Army and the Elkhart County Funeral Honor Guards in the veterans' section of Prairie Street Cemetery following the church services.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Lee's name can be made to his brother Harold Williams, who is overseeing the arrangements for Lee's final farewell. Lee's passing leaves a profound void, but his life of service, love, and devotion will continue to inspire all who were privileged to know him. He was a true soldier, a devoted son, a steadfast brother, and a friend to all. May he rest in eternal peace.
