Sarah Jean
Gurka
January 5, 1957 – November 10, 2024
Sarah Jean Cooke Gurka, age 67, passed away peacefully at her home in Elkhart, Indiana, on November 10, 2024. Born on January 5, 1957, in South Bend, Indiana, Sarah was the daughter of William W. Cooke and Helen Louise (Creech) Cooke. She was the youngest of four siblings, joining James (Jim) Cooke and Patrick (Pat) Cooke, who have both preceded her in death, and her surviving siblings, Mark Cooke of Elkhart, Indiana, and Mary Carroll of Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas.
Sarah is survived by her husband, Peter Edward Gurka, and their two sons, Patrick Joseph Gurka and Louis Emmett Gurka, whom she cherished deeply. She will also be dearly missed by her extended family, friends, and countless others whose lives she touched.
A Life Dedicated to Education and Advocacy
Sarah's passion for learning and advocacy was instilled in her from a young age. Her father, a journalist, and her mother, a tutor, fostered her enduring commitment to literacy and education. She pursued higher education with determination, earning a bachelor's degree from Earlham College, a master's degree in Nonprofit Administration from the University of Notre Dame, and a teaching certificate from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.
Sarah's dedication to education and social justice was evident throughout her career. She was the founder of the Literacy Network of Elkhart County, which was established in honor of her mother. She also worked at Westside Middle School as a technical assistant, where she supported English Language Learner (ELL) students and those with special needs. Sarah cared deeply and always fought for opportunities for marginalized communities, particularly people with disabilities, women, and immigrants.
Additionally, Sarah developed the IUSB annex in Elkhart, expanding opportunities for local students. Her work helped countless individuals in the community find their voice, confidence, and potential.
A Life Well Lived
Sarah was known for her vibrant personality and deep appreciation for life's simple joys. Her favorite color was purple, and lavender—her favorite flower and scent—was always close by. She loved spending time in nature, whether at the lake or on a quiet beach, and found inspiration in the scenic landscapes of Montana.
A proud Irish Catholic, Sarah celebrated her heritage and dreamed of one day visiting Ireland. Her love for Louisiana, especially its beignets and coffee, reflected her zest for new experiences and vibrant cultures. Her favorite mysteries and novels (never horror) were a testament to her inquisitive nature and love of storytelling.
Sarah's warmth, intelligence, and humor were felt by all who knew her. Her compassion, dedication, and sense of justice remain a guiding light for those who continue her work. Her spirit will forever be cherished by her family, friends, and community.
