Sara R. VanWormer, 87, of Granger and formerly of Elkhart, passed to her rest Tuesday afternoon, November 7, 2017 at Heritage Point, Mishawaka. A native of Elkhart, she was born on July 20, 1930 to the late Elvon S. and Mary Ann (Frey) Kauffman. She met the love of her life Donald R. VanWormer at a DAV dance in Elkhart. They were married on July 9, 1957, Don died December 15, 2002. Surviving is a daughter Dru Neice and husband Tony; six grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren; and brother James L. (Helen) Kauffman and special niece Karen Eaton. In addition to her husband, her son Tod M. VanWormer preceded her in death. After graduating in 1948 from Elkhart High School, Sara worked in accounting and did clerical work for the GSA (General Service Administration) in Indianapolis and Chicago. She was a longtime member of Hillcrest United Methodist Church, where she served as treasurer. She was also a member of the Hart City Kiwanis and helped with many projects and fund raisers over the years. She enjoyed helping as a volunteer with the Red Cross and wrote and published her own book of devotionals. Friends may call 1 hour prior to the 11:00 am Monday, November 13, 2017 celebration of life service for Sara at Hillcrest United Methodist Church, Chaplain John Schrock will officiate. Per her wishes, cremation has taken place. She will be laid to rest with Donald at Prairie Street Veterans Tower at a later date.
