Obituary

Samuel Dale “Sam” Rink, also known as “Santa”, 78, of Elkhart, passed away on Thursday, October 29, 2026 at his residence. He was born in Goshen, IN on July 17, 1948, to the late Christ and Betty (Clason) Rink.

Sam is survived by his children, Troy Rink, Adam (Brandi) Rink, Kirby (Stacy) Griffis, Lisa Rink, and Angela Russell; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; siblings, Henry Rink, Ruth (John) Schlabach), and Leeann Perry. He is preceded in death by his parents, son, Jeff Griffis, and sister, Sandra Price.

Visitation will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. in Elkhart, IN. A celebration of life service will follow at 8:00 p.m.; the family requests that friends and family be prepared to share a memory or favorite story about Sam. Cremation and burial will take place at a later date.

Sam was a tough, no-nonsense man who never minced his words. He served proudly in the United States Army and worked for Goshen Rubber for over 40 years prior to retiring. Though he had a hard exterior he let his soft side come through in the role of Santa Claus. Sam was a mall Santa for many years and would extend his services to the Concord Mall and private parties. He absolutely adored Christmas and looked forward to decorating for the Holiday every year.

Sam often kept to himself and enjoyed watching his old westerns and wrestling in the comfort of his own home. During the Summer he would enjoy venturing out to watch tractor pulls and would cook delicious meals on the grill outside. He loved his family immensely and would do just about anything to help anyone. Sam was often jokingly called the “Family Taxi.” If you needed a ride he would make sure you had one but would often respond with a reluctant, “I guess.” Sam will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
