He was born April 15, 1924, in Elkhart to James G. and Jennie E. (Fay) Miller. On Aug. 10, 1955, in Elkhart, he married Winnie E. Puterbaugh.
She survives along with one son, Jeffrey (Carmell) Miller of Elkhart; one daughter, Anita (Gerald) Hochstetler of Goshen; two grandchildren; one sister, Carol Rouch of Elkhart; and one brother, Robert (Junelle) Miller of Elkhart.
He was preceded in death by six sisters, Pauline Tinsley, Josephine Vantine, Ethel DeFord, Doris Smole, June Williams and Shirley Barnes; and one brother, Deke Miller.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to the 10 a.m. Tuesday funeral service, all at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Pastor Beth Sollenberger Morphew of Elkhart Valley Church of the Brethren will officiate. Burial will be in Prairie Street Cemetery in Elkhart, where military graveside rites will be conducted by Elkhart DAV Chapter 19 and the USAF Funeral Honor Guard of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
Mr. Miller was a telegrapher for the New York Central Railroad for 20 years, retiring in the early 1970s. He went on to become the maintenance supervisor at Elcona Country Club after that, retiring in 1989 after 15 years of service. He was an avid outdoorsman and belonged to the Elkhart County Campers Club, the Swinging Hoosiers Dance Club and the Swinging Campers and Square Dance Club, all of Elkhart.
Mr. Miller attended Concord High School, enjoyed watching sports on television and could always be found helping friends and neighbors with carpentry needs. He was a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving during World War II, where he flew numerous missions over Europe and North Africa with the 345th Bomb Squadron as a gunner on a B-26 Liberator. He accumulated 14 Bronze Stars and several Distinguished Unit Citations.
