ELKHART — Ronald A. "Ron" Smith, 66, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at 7:50 a.m. Monday, Jan. 4, at the Center for Hospice Care in Elkhart following an extended illness.
He was born Oct. 1, 1949, in Mishawaka, to the late Robert Smith and Evelyn (Lackey) Smith, who survives him in Elkhart.
Surviving him at home is his wife Joydeen A. "Dee" (Myers) Smith, whom he married in Edwardsburg, Mich., on April 11, 1970.
Also surviving are daughters Jenny R. Smith of Elkhart and Ronica D. (Rick) Born of Jones, Mich.; sister Linda Miller of Elkhart; brothers Bill (Barb) Smith of Haines City, Fla., and Cecil (Karen) and Randy (Linda) Smith, both of Osceola; and grandchildren Payton Chaney and Maggie and Ethan Born.
Ron worked at Adams and Westlake Ltd. of Elkhart for 15 years and attended Michiana Community Church of God. He enjoyed cars, auto racing and golf, and would always look forward to a trip to Myrtle Beach with his golfing buddies or spending time watching the races. As a Penn High School graduate, he also was an avid fan of Penn football. He will be best remembered for his love of being a mentor to his grandchildren.
Ron's life will be celebrated beginning with a visitation at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, at Michiana Community Church of God, 51637 Ash Road, Granger. A memorial service will follow there at 4 p.m. Pastor Denver Burns will officiate.
Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart has been assisting the family with cremation arrangements.
