Obituary

Ron Steven Holmes, 73, of Elkhart, passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2026 at his home.

Ron was born on November 9, 1952 in Evansville, IN to the late, Raymond L. Holmes and Margie Lee (Gibson) Holmes. Ron married the love of his life, Susan (Grimes) Holmes on June 1, 1991 at Augustine Lutheran Church in Elkhart.

He is preceded in death by his baby brother, Raymond Douglas Holmes.

Ron is survived by his wife of 35 years, Susan Holmes of Elkhart; brother, Ken Holmes of Silver Springs, FL; nephew, Brian Holmes of Elkhart; niece, Heather Holmes of Philadelphia, PA; and great nephew, Michael Holmes.

For many years, Ron served as a dedicated conductor for the railroad. His commitment to service and excellence began in his youth, where he achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout, earning every merit badges.

Ron was a man of many talents. He was a skilled woodworker and an exceptional cook—a craft he honed during his years cooking at the historic Hotel Elkhart. In the summer months, he found freedom on two wheels, riding his Harley and soaking in the season.

For 35 years, Ron and his beloved Susan built a life centered on adventure and a shared love for animals. They raised and bred Boxers, caring for each of their "fur children" with immense pride and affection.

The pair were true partners in travel and music. They spent years attending Grateful Dead concerts and exploring music festivals and amusement parks. Their adventures took them camping across the country. Ron travelled abroad to Bora Bora, Morocco and Tahiti.

Ron was a man of character, humor, and a deep love for the open road. Ron had a heart as big as his personality and he was known for his honesty, his infectious laugh, and his unwavering devotion to those he loved.
