IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Rochelle
Davis
February 9, 1951 – August 30, 2024
Ms. Rochelle Davis, 73, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 30, 2024, at 2:45 pm, surrounded by love and comfort in the home of her dear friend and caregiver, after bravely facing an extended illness. Born on February 9, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Bernice Johnson, Rochelle brought light, laughter, and warmth to everyone she met. Her life was a testament to resilience, love, and the power of community.
Rochelle is survived by her beloved sons, Tony A. Davis of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Thurmon M. J. "Marc" Davis of Middlebury, who both inherited their mother's strength and humor. Her legacy also lives on through her brother, Dorcey Davis of Minnesota, and her sister, Veleda (Melvin) Hare of Twin Falls, Idaho. She was a cherished grandmother to Damian A. and Kendrix A. Davis, Marshawn T. Moore, Aliyana Hobson, Alonzoe M. R., Canarry K. A., and Amari Davis. The family eagerly anticipates the arrival of one more precious granddaughter, who will undoubtedly carry forward Rochelle's spirited legacy. Beyond her immediate family, Rochelle leaves behind a loving host of extended relatives and dear friends who will forever remember her kindness, generosity, and boundless energy.
In addition to her mother, Rochelle was preceded in death by her daughter, Luana Alise Davis, who passed in 1991, and sisters Sedelia Y. Casson, Karen B. Hall, and Janice Galloway. Their memories, along with Rochelle's, will be cherished by those who knew and loved them.
Rochelle's memorial homegoing service, a celebration of her vibrant life, will be held at Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart on Friday, September 13, 2024, at 1:11 pm. (111 was Rochelle's "angel number".) Visitation will begin at noon, allowing friends and family to come together and share stories, laughter, and tears. Pastor Clarence Jones of the Community Missionary Baptist Church of Elkhart will officiate, guiding loved ones through this time of remembrance and reflection. In accordance with her family's wishes, cremation has taken place, honoring Rochelle's spirit and her connection to those she held dear.
Rochelle was a woman of many talents, but according to her sons—who both recount this with wide smiles—she was truly a master at two things: cooking up a storm and speaking her mind. Rochelle's kitchen was her kingdom, and she ruled it with passion and precision. No one dared talk back in her kitchen because if you did, she would quickly remind you who was in charge. Her culinary skills were legendary, and she held several certifications that confirmed what everyone already knew: Rochelle was a master chef. She owned and operated "Ro's House of Soul," a restaurant that brought comfort and joy to many. But Rochelle's cooking wasn't confined to her business; her heart was as big as her helpings, earning her the affectionate nickname "Heavy Handed Ro." She generously cooked for churches, food drives, and public events, often preparing meals that fed thousands. Her love for food was a reflection of her love for people—she nourished bodies and souls alike.
Rochelle's talents extended beyond the kitchen. She had a powerful voice, both in her singing and her presence. In her younger days, it was said that she provided backup vocals for legends like Isaac Hayes and B.B. King at the House of Blues in Chicago. Music was her joy, and Marvin Gaye was her muse—she never missed a chance to groove to "Let's Get It On." Rochelle lived unapologetically, dancing and singing her way through life, never afraid to be her true self.
Above all, Rochelle loved her family fiercely. She dedicated her life to her children and grandchildren, and her home was always open to others in need of care and love. She was a mother, grandmother, friend, and protector to many, always ready to lend a hand or an ear. Her legacy of love will continue to inspire those who knew her, reminding us to embrace life with the same boldness and generosity that she did.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Rochelle's memory may be made to her son, Tony. Rochelle's life was one of service, love, and joy, and her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
