Obituary

ELKHART -- Robert Eugene Sorrell, 87, of Elkhart, formerly of Carson City, Mich., died Wednesday (March 12, 2008) in East Lake Nursing Center.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Mt. Hope United Brethren Church, 5001 Mt. Hope Road, Carson City. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Revs. Charles Malson and Valerie Reynolds officiating. Interment will be in Payne Cemetery. Lux and Schnepp Funeral Home, Carson City, is assisting with arrangements.

He was born Jan. 2, 1921, to Ernest and Ethel Sorrell of Middleton, Mich. He married Isabelle Blem on March 19, 1944.

She survives along with one daughter, Diana Kay (Richard) Bolyard of Elkhart; three sons, Douglas E. (Carol) Sorrell of Houghton Lake, Mich., Kevin R. Sorrell of Redlands, Calif., and Norman E. Sorrell of Hubbardston, Mich.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Moyer; and four brothers, Ralph (Ruby) Sorrell, Irvin (Frances) Sorrell, Melvin (Barbara) Sorrell and Lyle (Jean) Sorrell.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Frank Sorrell; two sisters, Hattie Redman and Anna Sorrell; and two brothers, Donald and Gordon Sorrell.

Mr. Sorrell volunteered as janitor when he was 12 at North Shade United Brethren Church, near Middleton. He was janitor of Johnson Country School, North Shade Township, during his seventh and eighth grades of school. From age 16 to 23, he ran the family farm.

He worked at the Carson City Dairyland Creamery from December 1943 until the plant closed in 1970, and at Carson City Crystal Schools from January 1971 until his retirement in 1989. Mr. Sorrell served in many positions at North Shade, Carson City and Mt. Hope United Brethren churches and was a minister at Fenwick United Brethren Church. He volunteered at Carson City Hospital and along with his wife, was selected Carson City Citizen of the Year for 1997.
