Obituary

ELKHART — Robert W. "Bob" Monger, 89, of Elkhart, went home to be with the Lord following an extended illness at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, in his home, with his family at his side.

He was born Oct. 22, 1925, in Elkhart, to the late Wendell and Ruth (Powell) Monger.

He later married Maureen (Schwieters) Hartman on June 10, 1989, in Elkhart. She survives at home.

Also surviving are his sons, Bill Monger of Elkhart, Tim (Kim) Monger of Indianapolis, Bob (Joyce) Monger of Fort Wayne, Charlie (Anne) Monger of Elkhart, Tom (Beth) Monger of Reston, Va., John (Marla) Monger of Marquette, Mich., and Matt (Cindy) Monger of South Bend; daughter Liz Keiling of Elkhart; stepsons Dr. David (Brianna) Hartman of Syracuse, Dr. Michael Hartman of Elkhart, Dr. Chris (Kathy) Hartman of Carmel and Steve (Renee) Hartman of Union, Mich.; brother Ned Monger of Normal, Ill.; sister Marge Monger of Seminole, Fla.; niece Susan (Monger) Turner; 31 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to acknowledge and thank his caregivers, Lisa Danaher, Catrina Aistrop, Stephanie Rodriguez, Stephanie Weaver and Jennifer Long.

He was preceded in death by his former spouse; Angela (Thulis) Monger; sister-in-law Flo (Crow) Monger and a daughter, Mary Monger.

Bob's life will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 24832 U.S. 12, Edwardsburg, Mich., with a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16. A Mass of Christian burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, with visitation starting an hour prior. Father Joseph McCormick, OSA, will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Vincent Cemetery in Elkhart, with military honors being rendered by the U.S. Navy Funeral Honor Guard and Elkhart DAV 19.

Bob retired from Allied (Bendix) Signal Corp. in Mishawaka after 38 years as a quality control engineer. He was a graduate of Purdue University and served aboard in the U.S. Navy on the USS Hughes (DD410) during World War II.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church and Toastmasters, volunteered as a math teacher for Sister Virginia's Adult Education Program and was a cellist for the Elkhart Symphony Orchestra. He was an avid traveler, enjoying visits to Yosemite and various Civil War battlefields. He was an accomplished gourmet cook and wine aficionado.
