Aug. 8, 1921 - Sept. 27, 2011

ELKHART — Robert A. Gallay, 90, of Elkhart, passed away Tuesday morning, Sept. 27, 2011, at Elkhart General Hospital.

He was born Aug. 8, 1921, in Waterford to Sidney J. and Goldie (Croop) Gallay. He married Helen Louise Calbetzor on April 23, 1971, in Elkhart.

She survives, as well as three sons, Charles H. (Melody) Cress, Jeffery Lynn (Gladys) Cress and Paul A. (Carol Hamilton) Gallay; his daughter, Brenda Jo Gallay; three grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; as well as five children living and three deceased from his first marriage; three brothers, Oscar (Jenny) Gallay, Gene Gallay and Sidney Gallay; and a sister, Mickey Gallay.

Preceding him in death were sisters Ruth Lehman, Edith Slocom and Joyce Thurman, and brother John Gallay.

Robert worked at many places, including as a turkey farmer and at Sam Winer & Co. He was a World War II Army veteran and served from 1940 until his honorable discharge in 1944. He was a member of Bristol American Legion Post 143 and enjoyed watching Western movies.

Funeral services for Robert will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, at Billings Funeral Home, where friends may visit with the family beginning at 11 a.m. The Rev. Mardell Wilson will officiate. Military honors by the U.S. Army will be rendered immediately following the service. Cremation will follow with placement in the Veterans Towers at Prairie Street Cemetery at a later date.
