Obituary

ELKHART — Robert S. "Bob" Cook, 86, of Elkhart, passed away Monday, Nov. 30, in his home.

Bob was born May 29, 1929, in Matokey, W.Va., to the late Robert and Della (Reese) Cook.

In addition to his parents, a son, Tony Cook, and his siblings, Beatrice, Eddie, Hobart, Ruth, John, Rex and O.J. preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara, whom he married Aug. 18, 1983, in Elkhart.

Bob was blessed with six children, Steve (Cathy) Cook of Angleton, Texas, Sue (Ken) Hartogh of Lawrenceburg, Tenn., Kathy (Jim) Perron of Indianapolis, Karen (Bill) Marks of Lawrenceburg and Barry and Tim Hyser, both of Elkhart; sister Carolyn Herbert of Lafayette, La.; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Bob grew up in Rutledge, Tenn. He moved to northern Indiana in 1947. He worked for 20 years in the RV industry and retired after 15 years in maintenance for Red Roof Inns in Elkhart. As a hobby, Bob liked to work on small engines in his garage and enjoyed woodworking. He was very handy and could fix just about anything.

He was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 37 years and 9 months. Bob received two diplomas for alcohol and drug abuse counseling, one from Indianapolis in 1979 and one from Kalamazoo in 1980. He then helped to start the Goshen Detox Center in 1980 and 1981, and was a counselor there. He loved his many friends in A.A. and touched many people in his life with his wisdom.

Bob was proud of his Cherokee Native American heritage, and loved to visit Cherokee, N.C. He was a special person and will be missed.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Services celebrating Bob's life will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, with visitation for an hour prior, at Billings Funeral Home. Pastor John Hogsett of Faith United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Rice Cemetery.
