ELKHART -- Richard D. "Dick" Moore, 87, of Elkhart, passed away at 4:55 p.m. on Thursday, May 26, 2011, at Elkhart General Hospital.
He was born Jan. 5, 1924 in Elkhart to Mable Swarm and was raised by Dennis B. and Lucy V. (Swarm) Moore. On Dec. 29, 1941 he married Mary Josafat "Dolly" (DelPrete) Moore. She preceded him in death on Dec. 28, 2009.
Survivors include two sons, Anthony (Pam) Moore and Rich Moore, both of Elkhart; two daughters, Patricia (Ron) Burkhardt of Marble Falls, Texas, and Cappy (Casey) Buczkowski of Elkhart; half-brother, Carlysle Ervin of Elkhart; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
On Feb. 2, 1943, he entered active duty service in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the 3rd Infantry Division during World War II and served in several different battles and campaigns, such as Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Rhineland, Southern France and Central Europe, where he was awarded several different decorations and citations.
Dick was the owner and operator of Moore's Body Shop for nearly 18 years. He and his family later owned and operated AnRich Enterprises for 15 years prior to his retirement in 1993. He was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 31, 2011, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin Street, Elkhart. Funeral services will be held the next day at 11 a.m., also at Billings Funeral Home. The Rev. Father Glenn Kohrman of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, Elkhart, will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Vincent Cemetery. DAV Chapter 19 and the U.S. Army Funeral Honor Detail will render military graveside honors.
