ELKHART -- Richard G. "Dick" Massing, 75, of Elkhart, died at 5:55 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 23, 2008) in Valley View Health Care Center.
He was born Sept. 4, 1933, in Elkhart to Elmer and Viola (Stinebaugh) Massing.
He is survived by one daughter, Nancy Massing of Los Angeles, Calif.; one sister, Doris Beggs of Elkhart; and two brothers, Lyle (Shirley) Massing of South Bend and Terry (Zora) Massing of Spartanburg, S.C.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Bixby, and a half brother, Edward Kotwas.
Mr. Massing retired from the United States Postal Service as a supervisor in Banning, Calif. He was a 1951 graduate of Elkhart High School and served in the United States Army during the Korean War with the 86th AAA Missile Battalion as a surface-to-air fire control crewman from 1954 until his honorable discharge in 1956. He loved to go to Las Vegas, play bingo and eat out in restaurants.
Friends may call for one hour prior to the 1 p.m. Sunday service at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. The Rev. Dale Turner will officiate. Cremation will follow the service, with burial at Rice Cemetery in Elkhart at a later date.
