Obituary

ELKHART: Former Mayor and Fire Chief, Richard Lee "Dick" Moore, 91, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 24, 2025 at Hubbard Hill, in the comfort of his family. Dick was born on April 13, 1934 in Mishawaka, Indiana to the late Carl F. and Merle (Wambaugh) Bartlett Moore.

Dick married his best friend Nancy Lee (Cook) on June 10, 1956 in Elkhart. Nancy passed away on January 3, 2025, and his daughter Victoria "Vicci" Lynn Moore passed on January 18, 2024, as well as his sister Sue and her husband and brother-in-law Ted Johnson.

Surviving is a son Jeffrey E. "Jeff" Moore, grandson Adam R. Moore, brother, James (Gale) Bartlett and sister-in-law Pat (Ron) Steele.

Dick's entire life has been one of service and dedication to his country, community, and neighbors. He proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict from November 1951 until his honorable discharge in April of 1955. Dick's service to his community continued with him serving as the Elkhart City Street Commissioner for 12 years. A Firefighter and then Fire Chief for 20 years, and Mayor of the City of Elkhart for 8 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 143, VFW, and DAV #19. Dick was very humble and always put others before himself and was a true patriot. He enjoyed living on the river, taking family and friends boating, fishing, and tubing.

In honoring his wishes, cremation was chosen under the care of Billings Funeral Home. Elkhart

Both Dick and Nancy will be honored in a private family and friends graveside celebration service in May at Rice Cemetery. Rev. Keith McFarren will officiate, as well as honors rendered by the Elkhart City Fire Department and the United States Navy Funeral Honor Guard.
