GOSHEN — Richard E. "Dick" Dyer, 81, of Goshen, passed away Thursday afternoon, July 16, at Elkhart General Hospital.
Dick was born June 7, 1934, in Reed City, Mich., to the late Joseph E. and Nova B. (Smith) Dyer.
He married the former Esther Rose Kenney on Aug. 24, 1957, at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Reed City.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Esther; son Martin P. (Nicole) Dyer of Bristol; daughter Elizabeth (Roy) Vennekotter of Lockport, Ill.; three grandchildren, Shelby Vennekotter, Jason Dyer and Morgan Dyer; sister Ina Jane Wells of Ligonier; four nephews; two nieces; and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Timothy M. Dyer, and brother-in-law W. Eugene Wells.
Dick worked as an operating engineer for Miles Laboratories (Bayer) for 16 years, retiring in 1993.
He was a longtime member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and a 3rd Degree and 4th Degree member of Knights of Columbus. Dick was a life member of Moose Lodge 705 in Reed City.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, from 1953 until his honorable discharge in 1955.
Dick was a kind and gentle man. He liked helping out when he could, spending time with his friends and family and he loved to talk.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, July 19, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. A parish rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, July 20, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 1108 S. Main St., Elkhart. There will also be an hour of visitation prior to the mass. The Rev. Zachary Barry will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Vincent Cemetery.
