ELKHART — Richard J. "Rich" Carter, 52, of Elkhart, passed away Saturday, May 21, at his home.
Rich was born April 6, 1964, in Lafayette, to Dr. James M. and Barbara (Hansing) Carter.
He married Susan J. Smith on Nov. 23, 1990, in Elkhart.
Surviving are his wife, Susan J.; children Justin L. Carter (fiancé Amber Ballentine), Jason L. (Andrea) Carter, Amber N. Carter and Alana N. Carter, all of Elkhart; grandchildren Parker W. Carter of Missouri, Ariel M., Cody L., and Bentley J. Carter, all of Elkhart; mother Barbara M. Carter of West Lafayette; sisters Sally Carter of Lafayette, Linda (Herb) Miller of Wolcott and Chuck (Kathleen) Carter of Dayton, Ohio; and niece Brigitte Carter and nephews Steve (Amanda) Carter and JC Carter. His father, Dr. James M. Carter, preceded Rich in death July 6, 2009.
Rich was the manager for Aaron's in the Elkhart and Dunlap area for 15 years and also worked in sales and leasing for 26 years. He loved to play guitar, ride his motorcycle and have family get-togethers.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 26, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. A celebration of life service for Rich will be 11 a.m. with an additional hour of visitation starting at 10 a.m. Friday, May 27, at Belmont Mennonite Church, 925 Oxford St., Elkhart. Pastor Russell Jensen will officiate. Burial will follow in Plum Grove Cemetery, Union, Mich.
