He was born Aug. 5, 1931, in Elkhart to Richard L. Sr. and Leona (English) Bailey. He married Shirley A. Jayson on Dec. 11, 1975.

She survives along with one son, Richard L. (Chassidy) Bailey III of Morris, Ill.; four daughters, Karen (Don) Rush of Indianapolis, and Angie (Albert) Simeri, Sue (Mike) Freshour and Mary Corl, all of Elkhart; two stepsons, Jeff Carpenter and Andy (Sheila) Carpenter, both of Elkhart; two stepdaughters, Laurie Bridges and Colleen (Nick) Torok, both of Elkhart; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Pastor James Pettit will officiate. Interment will be in Mission Hills Memorial Gardens. Niles, Mich.

Mr. Bailey graduated from Elkhart High School in 1949. He was a lifelong fisherman and resident of Elkhart. He achieved the rank of Life Scout and enjoyed working in his yard and garden. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean war.
