MIDDLEBURY — Richard J. Ambrosen, 88,of Middlebury, passed away peacefully of natural causes at his home on Friday, Sept. 30.
He was born Oct. 18, 1927, in Winona, Minn., to the late John and Clara (Janisch) Ambrosen, and went on to marry Frances M. Gallagher on Sept. 4, 1985, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She passed away in 2012.
Surviving are sons John (Kristy) Ambrosen of Jones, MI, Richard Ambrosen of Goshen and Leif Ambrosen of Vandalia, MI; daughters Tona Ambrosen of Vicksburg, MI and Betsy (Phil) Fox of Mishawaka; step-children David Onion of Ft. Wayne and Kristie (Dave) Borgaard of Las Vegas, NV; former spouse Robin Ambrosen of Vandalia, MI; sister Joanne (Richard) Ylvisaker of Iowa; brother-in-law Gene Lundberg of Minnesota; 8 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and a host of step grandchildren. A step-son, Glenn Onion and a sister, Donna Lundberg, precedes Richard in death.
Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart will be hosting a celebration of Richard's life on from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, followed by a funeral service there at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Pastor Dennis B. Smith of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Constantine, Mich., will officiate and burial will follow the services at Rice Cemetery of Elkhart, where the U.S. Navy Funeral Honor Guard and DAV #19 will render military graveside honors.
Richard was a chemical engineer and executive sales manager for Bayer Industries (Miles Laboratories) of Elkhart, retiring after many years there. In addition, he served as an intermittent federal employee for over 20 years as a field inspector for FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security He was also a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Middlebury and Elk's Lodge No. 425 of Elkhart. In his free time, he enjoyed bowling, golf, hunting and fishing and was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan.
In his earlier years, he was active in Boy Scouts, receiving the coveted Eagle Scout rank, was a graduate of the University of Minnesota and served honorably in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
