IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Rex A
Sutterby
December 29, 1959 – April 14, 2025
Mr. Rex Allen Sutterby, 65, of Elkhart, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, April 14, 2025, at 5:34 p.m., after a long and courageous battle with COPD. Surrounded by the love and presence of his devoted family, Rex left this world as he lived—steadfast, loved, and deeply cherished.
Rex was born on December 29, 1959, in Elkhart to the late Edmond C. and Pearl A. "Alberta" (Ostrom) Sutterby, Sr. A true son of Elkhart, Rex carried the strength, humility, and grit of his hometown in everything he did.
In March of 1985, he married the love of his life, Gina R. Feller, and from that day forward, their lives became a beautiful testament to enduring love, partnership, and shared joy. Gina survives at home, holding close 40 unforgettable years of marriage to her beloved "Sexy Rexy"—a nickname that perfectly captured both his charm and their enduring affection.
Rex's legacy lives on through his loving children: Shana A. (David Johnson) Garcia and Kathy M. (Kat Marley) Sutterby, both of Elkhart, and his son Rocky L. (Cassandra) Sutterby of Lake Station, Indiana. He was a proud and playful grandpa to Austin (Thalia) Garcia, Eric (Abigail) Garcia, Thalia (Logan) Garcia, Arika (Kobe Johnson) Sutterby, Dawn Sutterby, Rocky Sutterby Jr., Zoe Sutterby, Stovon Johnson, Nevaeh Flowers, and Jayden Nolan. His eyes lit up at the mention of his great-granddaughter, Eden Garcia, who brought him immeasurable joy in his later years.
Rex is also survived by his dear siblings Edmond C. "Cook" Sutterby, Jr. and Mike Sutterby, both of Elkhart, and Judith "Judy" Beudoin of Middlebury, Indiana, as well as a wide circle of cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, outlaws, and friends—each of whom could tell you a Rex story that would leave you laughing, nodding, or reaching for a tissue. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Steve Sutterby, and his sister Jessie Kay Gilbert.
Friends and loved ones will gather to honor Rex's life on Friday, April 18, 2025, at Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Elkhart. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by a heartfelt service at 11:00 a.m. officiated by Reverend Jeremy Sarber. He will be laid to rest at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola.
Rex spent much of his working life in the RV industry, where his talents and work ethic made him a valued team member, particularly during his years with Elks Conversions. His mechanical mind was a marvel—if it had a motor or moving parts, Rex could fix it. Instructions were optional; Rex's instincts were usually all he needed.
Though he retired earlier than he would have liked due to health issues, retirement gave him the time to focus on what mattered most: his family, his friends, and the simple pleasures that made life sweet. In his healthier days, he was an avid fisherman, happiest with a pole in hand and a breeze on the water. And even after he could no longer fish himself, he loved hearing tales of fishing adventures from Rocky and the boys.
He had a soft spot for crime dramas, cheering (and yelling) for his Green Bay Packers, and chatting over breakfast with Gina at RJ's—where he was a regular fixture and a local favorite. He loved the familiar comfort of a cold Budweiser and a good laugh with old friends. Above all, Rex had a heart as big as the sky. Generous to a fault, he'd give the shirt off his back, offer a helping hand without hesitation, and share a joke to brighten your day.
He was proud of his country, full of stories, full of love, and full of life. Rex had a way of making everyone feel like they mattered. His presence was steady, his hugs were healing, and his love was unconditional.
He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved.
