ELKHART -- Regina Cairre Zimmerman, 93, of Elkhart , died at 1:25 a.m. Tuesday (March 10, 2009) in Elkhart General Hospital.

She was born Jan. 1, 1916, in West Union, Minn., to Anton and Anne (Spellman) Schlicht. On Nov. 4, 1941, she married Robert O. Zimmerman in Minnesota. He died March of 1972 in Elkhart .

Mrs. Zimmerman is survived by three sons, Thomas (Janet) Zimmerman of Middlebury, Robert (Norma) Zimmerman of Elkhart and Mark (Sandy Bacewic) Zimmerman of Bristol; three daughters, Barbara (Dennis) Lyon, Renee (Ken Bottenfield) Zimmerman and Leaann Fuller, all of Elkhart ; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by one great-grandson, Theadore R. Miller; and seven siblings, Leo, Ed and Max Schlicht, Rose Werre, Bertha Kane, Veronica Wakefield and Christina Schurman.

A professional baker and cook most of her life, Mrs. Zimmerman cooked at North Side Middle School for a short while and was the noon lunch cook at Flytrap's Restaurant for nearly 20 years, retiring in 1978. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church and a former member of the Elkhart FOP Women's Auxiliary.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart . A rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 3:30 p.m. There will be one hour of visitation prior to Saturday's 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Vincent's. The Rev. Phillip DeVolder will officiate. Burial will follow in Rice Cemetery.
