He was born Nov. 9, 1921, in Elkhart County to Raymond Rueben and Elbertine E. (Cotterill) Smith. On Aug. 22, 1942, in Elkhart, he married Mary Alice Hart.
She survives along with one daughter, Barb J. McIntosh of Elkhart; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty (Guy) Bullock of Three Rivers, Mich.; and two brothers, Bill (Maxine) Smith of Elkhart and Philip (Cindy) Smith of Middlebury.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Roger and Dave Smith.
There will be no visitation. DAV Chapter 19 and the U.S. Army Burial Honors Detail will conduct military honors at a private graveside service in Prairie Street Cemetery. The Rev. Keith McFarren will officiate. Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Smith retired from Bendix Corp. after 33 years as a design draftsman. He was a 1940 graduate of Elkhart High School, enjoyed fishing and gardening and was an avid golfer. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1946, attaining the rank of sergeant. He served with Company M, 3rd Infantry Regiment in northern France and earned the EAME Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Star, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon and the Victory Medal.
