Former Elkhart Police Officer Randall "Randy" Lee Cutter, 72, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully, Friday afternoon, August 28, 2023 at the home of his son Joseph in Plymouth. Randy was born on March 8, 1951 in Elkhart to the late Robert L. and Lillian Lois (Jackson) Cutter. Surviving are his three children, two sons, Robert (Kristal) Cutter, Joseph (Holly) Cutter and a daughter Jessica (Vern) Gingerich; also, six loving grandchildren, Troy, Taylor, Trent, Skyler, Lily and Ian; brother Jon David Cutter and a sister JoAnn Hughes; step-mother Katherine Cutter and special friends Marla J. Kline-Cutter, Dustin Taber and Russell Olmstead survive as well.
Randy served his community as an Elkhart City Policeman for over 35 years, from January 16, 1974 until February 27, 2009. While at the Elkhart City Police Department, he served as a K-9 officer, detective, patrolman and on the SWAT Team.
He also served as a jail officer with St Joseph County for 7 years. He proudly served in the Army Reserves from 1971 until 1976. He was also a volunteer firefighter with the Jefferson Township Fire Department.
Randy's passion was deer hunting, he used to hunt at their farm north of Goshen. For many years, he showed draft horses at the county fair. He once had over 20 draft horses as well as saddle horses and beef cattle. He was involved in his children's activities, including coaching little league, soccer, softball teams, and cheering on their many accomplishments. He was an avid Notre Dame fan and enjoyed playing poker.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Randy's life, beginning with visitation from 1-3 pm and 5-7 p.m. Friday, September 1, 2023 at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. Elkhart. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 2, 2023 at the funeral home, with an additional hour of visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Jim Bontrager, Elkhart Police Chaplin will officiate. Burial will follow at Little Pine Cemetery, Goshen, where the Elkhart Police Department Honor Guard will render final honors.
