Phyllis Maxine Witmer, 100, of Elkhart, passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at Elkhart General Hospital. She was born in Elkhart on May 17, 1923, to the late Albert Lee and Mabel (Truhn) Russell.
Phyllis is also preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, John L. "Jack" Witmer, and her son, John A. Witmer. Surviving are her daughters, Jane Wagner and Jackie (Gary) Johnson; grandchildren, Heather (Shawn) Kintigh, Holly (Brandon) Sweatman, Hope (Hassan) Larhrib, and Connie (Steven) Cochran; 15 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; and multiple adopted kids and grandchildren. Phyllis was known as "Granny" to everyone.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, from 5-7 p.m. The service to will held the next day, Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. officiated by Pastor Ed Owen with an hour of visitation to be held prior on Wednesday from 10-11 a.m. A graveside service at Rice Cemetery will immediately follow after the service. Memorial donations may be given to Heart to Heart Hospice, 7240 Chase Oaks Blvd, Plano, TX 75025.
Phyllis was a kind, laid back, and loving woman who loved her family and served the Lord faithfully. She was a retired homemaker and was an associate member of the 1st Presbyterian Church in Haines City Florida and was a member of Ontwa Baptist Church in Edwardsburg. She was a skilled golfer and bowler in her early years where she played in many leagues and teams locally and in Florida. In her spare time, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting "scrubbies" for friends and family, and putting together Jigsaw puzzles. Phyllis loved spending time with her family and was blessed to have had 100 years on this earth to watch her family grow. She will be dearly missed by her family and by those whose lives she has touched.
