ROTONDA WEST, Fla. — Phyllis Joan Reiner, 79, of Rotonda West, formerly of Elkhart, Ind., passed away Thursday, June 28, 2012, at Venice Regional Medical Center in Venice after a sudden illness.
She was born Dec. 26, 1932, in Elkhart to the late John and Nora (Felts) Phoebus. She was preceded in death by her brother, Johnny Phoebus.
Phyllis was a graduate of Elkhart High School, where she met her husband. She married Carl W. Reiner on Sept. 10, 1950. During the early years of their marriage, she owned and operated her own beauty shop, named Cut and Curl, from her home. Phyllis was an avid homemaker, quilter, and hobbyist. Rarely could you visit her home without witnessing several sewing projects, stained glass creations, ceramics or handmade doll houses. Her family proudly displays her hand-painted quilt mural mounted on the side of the barn at the family farm located at C.R. 126 and C.R. 11 in Goshen.
Phyllis was community-minded as an active member of American Red Cross and assisted local residents including those in the 1965 tornado in Dunlap. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star-District 151, where she was a former state district deputy and a past worthy matron of the Bristol chapter. When she and her husband Carl wintered in their Florida home, she volunteered with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 99, Division 09, District 07 Rotonda West. She held the rank of past commander and coxswain (person in charge of the boat) and was auxiliary operation officer. Phyllis had more than 7,500 volunteer hours with the Coast Guard Auxiliary in her 16-year tenure. She was also a member of St. John's United Church of Christ.
She is survived by her husband, Carl, and their three children, Sharon M. (Dick) Hack of Fishkill, N.Y., Catherine A. Reiner and John C. (Sherri) Reiner, both of Elkhart; and six grandchildren, Todd R. (Lindsay) Hack, Scott M. Hack, Chaise Weaver, Marian (Seth) MacOwan, Michelle Reiner and Michael Reiner.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 6, 2012, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. Elkhart. A service to celebrate her life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7, 2012, with visitation one hour prior. Ed Frutig, a close family friend, will officiate. Burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
A memorial will be held in her honor in Florida in October.
