Obituary

Mrs. Phylis Eileen (Sites) Harradon, 74, of Elkhart, Indiana, passed away peacefully in the familiar comfort of her own home, with her faithful and devoted husband, Dennis, by her side on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at 9:25 a.m., following an extended illness.

Born in Elkhart on May 11, 1952, Phylis was the daughter of the late Frances (Chasteen) Sites. In 1977, she married the love of her life, Dennis M. Harradon, beginning a partnership built on unwavering devotion, quiet companionship, and countless shared adventures. Though they never had children, theirs was a life rich in love, laughter, friendship, and simple joys. After nearly fifty-five years together, Dennis survives at home, carrying with him a lifetime of treasured memories and the enduring love they shared.

Phylis is also survived by several loving cousins; a host of extended family members; many caring friends and neighbors; and her beloved canine companions, Enya, Pumpkin, and Tater-Tot, who faithfully brightened her days and never missed an opportunity to remind her when it was time for a treat.

In accordance with her wishes for simplicity and dignity, cremation has taken place under the care and assistance of Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart. A private burial of her cremated remains at Adamsville Cemetery near Edwardsburg, Michigan, will take place in the near future.

Throughout her working years, Phylis was known for her dependability, kindness, and strong work ethic. She spent many years employed with Burcliff Industries in Mishawaka before continuing her career with the State of Indiana as an Unemployment Deputy Clerk, from which she eventually retired. She approached her work much as she approached her life—with quiet determination, patience, and a genuine concern for others.

Phylis never measured happiness by the size of a crowd around her. She found contentment in the people she loved, the places she explored, and the simple pleasures that made life meaningful. Home was her favorite destination, but she was always eager for a drive down a country road, a weekend camping trip, or an unexpected adventure. Few things brought her more excitement than spotting a garage sale sign and convincing Dennis to make “just one more stop.” Together they spent countless hours traveling the back roads, discovering hidden treasures and creating memories that neither of them needed a souvenir to remember.

She possessed a creative spirit and enjoyed crocheting beautiful handmade items, often working patiently stitch by stitch while listening to music or relaxing at home. She loved challenging herself with jigsaw puzzles, many of which became collaborative projects shared with Dennis around the kitchen table. Their life together was filled with these simple but meaningful moments—quiet afternoons, shared laughter, and the comfort of always having one another nearby.

Phylis also enjoyed meeting her cousin Carol for lunch at Cappy’s, where good food was secondary to good conversation. She delighted in cruising through the Bahamas, admired the beauty of nature while camping at Pla-Mor Campground near Nappanee, and could often be found watching home renovation programs, imagining how she might redesign a room if given the chance. She loved classic country music, followed the accomplishments of Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever with enthusiasm, and cheered for them as passionately as any lifelong fan.

An animal lover through and through, Phylis had a tender heart for all creatures great and small. Whether caring for her own pets or admiring wildlife during a camping trip, she found joy in the companionship and innocence animals provide. Her kindness extended naturally to people as well. She was the sort of person who remembered familiar faces, appreciated thoughtful gestures, and valued genuine friendships over superficial acquaintances.

Those who knew Phylis will remember her gentle nature, her independent spirit, her appreciation for life’s simple pleasures, and the quiet strength with which she faced both good days and difficult ones. Most of all, she will be remembered for the life she built alongside Dennis—a love story not defined by grand gestures, but by steadfast loyalty, enduring friendship, and the countless ordinary moments that together became extraordinary.

Though her chair may now sit empty and the roads she loved to travel may seem a little quieter, the memories she created, the kindness she shared, and the love she gave so freely will continue to live on in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known her.
