Obituary

Mr. Philip J. DeJohn, Sr., 82, of Granger, passed away peacefully with his daughter at his side following an extended illness at Heritage Point Assisted Living Center in Mishawaka on Thursday, March 26, 2020.  He was born Sept. 14, 1937 in Newaygo, MI to the late Philip and Stephanie E. (Lezauski) DeJohn. He later married Mildred A. Wildoner in 1959 in Newaygo. She passed away in 2017.

Surviving are his children Philip J. DeJohn, Jr. of Grabill, Lillese "Lee" (Marge Reynolds) DeJohn of Cassopolis, MI, and John (Cheryl) and Paul (Julie) DeJohn, both of Elkhart; brother Thomas DeJohn of Freemont, MI; 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. A daughter, Doreen Kloosterman, and a brother, David DeJohn, preceded Phil in death.

Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart will be hosting Phil's celebration of Life service but date and times are private. It is the desire of the family to include everyone in attending Phil's visitation, but due to the current public health situation, attendance guidelines and social distancing as requested by the CDC will be observed at all times by the funeral home staff. This situation is subject to change at any time. Burial will take place at Newaygo (MI) City Cemetery on Monday, Apr. 6, 2020 at 11:00 am. Anyone needing additional service information are encouraged to contact a family member.

Phil owned Art People and DeJohn Advertising in Elkhart for many years, then later worked at the local Menard's and Big R as well. He was a member of the Lion's Club and was an avid hunter and fisherman, skills no doubt honed by his youthful affinity for Boy Scouts. He was outgoing and social, loved all kinds of artwork, spent many years as a Boy Scout Leader, and was thankful for his many friends and caring staff at Heritage Point, where he served as the official "ambassador" and greeter.

Family and friends are encouraged to browse the funeral home's website, where one can share the obituary, leave condolences for the family, order flowers, get directions and more.
