He was born Nov. 2, 1935, in Elkhart to John and Vinnie (Goldy) Mapes.
He is survived by one daughter, Michelle Mapes of Elkhart; one son, Brian Mapes of Elkhart; one granddaughter; five great-grandchildren; and five sisters, Doris Cox, Rose Gillingham and Florence Flowers, all of Elkhart, Edith Colpetzer of Wakarusa and Dolly Lee of Phoenix.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack, Charles and Harold Mapes; and two sisters, Inez Flowers and Eunice Flowers.
Friends may call from 4 until the 6 p.m. Monday funeral service at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Pastor Gerald Floor of the Living Rock Church will officiate. Cremation will follow, with his ashes being placed in the veterans section of Prairie Street Cemetery at a later date.
Mr. Mapes retired from Jessen Manufacturing, where he worked for 39 years. He was currently working at Riggs Trucking as a parts delivery driver and was a member of Bristol American Legion 143. He enjoyed watching NASCAR and Colts and Notre Dame football.
Mr. Mapes was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.
