ELKHART — Patricia A. "Patty" Hammes, 74, of Elkhart, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 13.
She was born June 4, 1942 in Elkhart to Francis and Rose (Vernard) Replogle.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Henry E. Hammes of Elkhart; 4 daughters, Carolyn (Tom) Carton of Elkhart, Pamela James of Dyersburg, TN, Laura (Dave) Sandusky of South Bend, and Sarah (Jim) Bates of Sparta, NJ; 2 brothers, Chuck (Linda) Replogle of Tallahassee, FL, and Dave (Colleen) Replogle of Elkhart; a sister, Judy (John) Castaneda of Elkhart; 6 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 2 great-granddaughters; 1 step-great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.
She was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church for many years. Patty honored the Lord in everything she did in life. She used her God-given talents in making and restoring beautiful quilts. She made baby quilts and receiving blankets for unwed mothers with a very special place in her heart for all children.
Patty received a Bachelor's of Art in Creative Writing at the age of 50 and blessed many with her writings. In her love of history and family, she became an avid genealogist and has archived thousands of pictures and documents. She shared her love of reading with others by giving them meaningful books.
She loved being with her friends and family, and with her husband, Henry, hosted many celebrations. Her theme over the last two years has been, "What's next?" as she fought her illness, and she continually prayed the prayer of a father found in Mark 9:24b, "I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief" (NIV).
She was such a positive, strong lady throughout her life and never gave up hope. She gave so many of us hope and her beautiful Christian spirit had an irresistible glow. She wants all to know Philippians 4:7.
The family wishes to thank Dr. James Jin at Elkhart Clinic, Dr. Roderich Schwarz of Goshen Cancer Center, and their team members for their wonderful care and counsel.
The family will receive friends two hours prior to the noon Celebration of Life service on Saturday, Dec. 31 at St. Marks Missionary Church, 55240 Bittersweet Road, Mishawaka, IN 46545, followed by lunch and fellowship.
Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin Street, Elkhart, is entrusted with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Riley Children's Foundation, 30 S. Meridian St., Suite 200, Indianapolis, IN 46204-3509, in memory of Patricia Hammes.
