June 11, 1929 - March 8, 2011
ELKHART - The family of Oretha Davis of Elkhart wishes to announce that she went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, in Elkhart General Hospital at 4:08 a.m. She was born on June 11, 1929, in Bernie, MO, to George and Odessa (Chandler) Forrest Sr. She later married Roosevelt Davis in Arkansas in 1946. He died in Elkhart in 2000 after 54 years together. Mourning her loss is her son, Roosevelt Davis Jr. of Elkhart; three sisters, Josephine Pulliman, Earlean Gray and Ruth Chavis, all of Elkhart; and four grandchildren, Sonya, Oscar and Clarice "Cissy" Davis, all of South Bend, and LaRinda Davis of Elkhart. Also left to cherish her memory are great-grandchildren, Sierra, Kenny, SaLynn, Sydni, Sykia, Miyia and Adonnis; and her great-great-grandson, Teon; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roosevelt; her parents; a brother, George Forrest Jr.; and three sisters, Mercedes Forrest, Wyzella Simmons and Mattie Brown. A celebration of Oretha's life will take place on Friday, March 18, 2011, in Community Missionary Baptist Church, 228 Chapman Avenue in Elkhart, where she was a member for over 50 years. Visitation will be held at 11:00 a.m. and the funeral will follow at noon. Pastor Steven R. Barnes will officiate and the eulogy will be by Reverend Lafate Owens, pastor of the church. Burial will take place at Little Pine Cemetery in Goshen. Billings Funeral Home of Elkhart has been entrusted with the arrangements. A devout and reverent Christian lady, Oretha also served on the church's Usher Board until her declining health required her early retirement about five years ago. Her greatest loves included her family, close friends and her church, and she will be best remembered for helping those in need. Most who knew her considered Oretha as their own personal grandmother, a role that came quite naturally for her. Contributions may be made in Oretha's memory to the Community Missionary Baptist Church in Elkhart.
