ELKHART — Mrs. Oma J. Overton, 98, of Elkhart, passed away of natural causes at 3:34 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at Eastlake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born in Blount County, Ala., on June 1, 1914, to the late Josiah and Millie (Nuborn) Tidwell. She later married William H. Overton Dec. 12, 1928, in Double Springs, Ala. He passed away in 1979 in Elkhart.
Oma was also preceded in death by her sons, Gar, Burt, Odean and Hassen Overton; brothers Burton, Luther, Sherman, Quimby, Tom, Reece and Earl Tidwell; and her sisters, Connie Hall and Donnie Bell.
Surviving are her daughters Onie (Jay) McQueary, Norma (Robert) Zimmerman, Tressie (Mike) McCavitt and Wilma (Ronnie) Gygi, all of Elkhart; 14 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Oma's life will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at Billings Funeral Home in Elkhart. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012, at Elkhart Church of God, 28082 C.R. 4, Elkhart, with visitation starting at 10 a.m. Pastor B.J. Bishop will officiate and burial will follow services in Prairie Street Cemetery in Elkhart.
Oma was a homemaker who enjoyed taking care of her family. She was an avid gardener and quilter, and will be best remembered for her one-of-a-kind vegetable soup. She was also a devout member of Elkhart Church of God.
