Obituary

Olive Grace (Yoder) Miller, 100, of Hubbard Hill in Elkhart, passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord on November 18, 2023.

Grace was born in Topeka, IN, on August 16, 1923, the daughter of Edwin J. and Mollie (Stoltzfus) Yoder. On September 1, 1962, she married Edward "Ed" G. Miller in Goshen.

After graduating from Topeka High School and taking a year of secretarial training at Goshen College, Grace worked for two years at the Mennonite Publishing House in Scottsdale, PA. Changing directions in her life, she received an RN degree at LaJunta Mennonite School of Nursing in LaJunta, CO, and a BS in Nursing from Goshen College, subsequently working in the nursing profession in Mexico, Illinois, and Elkhart for 35 years.

After retiring, Grace continued her life of service, volunteering for 28 years as a "grandmother" with the preschool children of CAPS in Elkhart. She also took up wood carving at that time and became a master carver of many beautiful small animals, spoons, and other articles.

Grace was an active member of the Prairie Street Mennonite Church as long as her health allowed. She had a special love for her Prairie Street family.

Grace and Ed enjoyed spending part of each winter in Sarasota, FL, and travelling to enjoy their shared interest in birding. When she could no longer travel, Grace watched birds on her computer, especially the eagle nest live-cams in various parts of the country.

Grace retained her sharp, inquisitive mind to her last days, probing visitors about world events. On her 100th birthday in August, she enjoyed a celebration with 75 family and friends who shared their memories and thanks for her many cards and remembrances through the years. Keeping up with her family through email and Facebook was one of Grace's special joys.

Along with her parents and husband, Grace was preceded in death by two brothers, Gerald (Maggie) Yoder and Galen (Esther) Yoder, and two sisters, Genevieve (John) Friesen and Gladys (Dewayne) Johns; two sisters-in-law, Mary (Peter) Matthew and Fannie Mae (Marvin D.) Miller, and two brothers-in-law, Marvin J. (Ruth) Miller and Joseph (Phyllis) Miller. She is survived by two brothers-in-law, Lester (Martha) Miller and Eli (Connie) Miller, and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth (Erwin) Tyson, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In accordance with Grace's wishes, cremation has been chosen. Services will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023, with a private graveside service to begin at 10 AM at Prairie Street Cemetery. Following graveside services, the family invites everyone to join them for a memorial service at Prairie Street Mennonite Church, 1316 Prairie Street, Elkhart, IN 46516, beginning at 11 AM. Pastor Quinn Brenneke will be officiating.

Memorial donations made in Grace's honor can be directed to Prairie Street Mennonite Church or Hubbard Hill Estates. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Hubbard Hill and SouthernCare Hospice for their kindness and quality care given to Grace through her last days.
