ELKHART -- Miranda Nichole "Stick" Hapner, 22, of Elkhart, died at 3:27 p.m. Wednesday in Elkhart General Hospital, after a motor vehicle accident earlier this week.
She was born June 11, 1986, in Elkhart, to Jeffrey A. Denney and Lynette M. Perry.
They survive along with her fiancee, Darren C. Swoape, of Elkhart; a daughter, Sarah L. Swoape, at home; her stepfather, Steven Hapner of South Bend; three brothers, Dallas L. Carter of Cherry Point, N.C., Brandon L. Abel and Jeffrey Denney, both of Elkhart; eight sisters, Jessica M. and Christina N. Carter, both of Perry, Ga., Brianna Dodson of Little Rock, Ark., April Chaney of Mishawaka, Samantha and Jillian Hapner, both of South Bend, Jackie Denney of Elkhart, and Cami Denney of Bristol; maternal grandparents, Charles (Karen J.) Perry of Elkhart; paternal grandparents David E. (Marlene I.) Carter of Philadelphia, Miss., Jack (Sue) Denney of Edwardsburg, Mich., and Wayne (Darlene) Haney of White Pigeon, Mich.; and paternal great-grandparents Virgil (Edith) Darkwood of White Pigeon, Mich., Jennie Vowell of Philadelphia, Miss., and Dorothy Carter of Bradford, Pa.
Ms. Hapner worked as a quality control inspector for Gulfstream RV in Nappanee for more than a year. A 2004 graduate of Elkhart Central High School, she was studying criminal justice at the Indiana Business College, and was planning a career as a case worker or parole officer. An avid University of Michigan fan, she played powder-puff football in high school.
She spent all her free time with her daughter, and enjoyed coloring, drawing and reading stories together, as well as sharing pictures on her cell phone.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church, 53953 C.R. 17, Elkhart. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. James Pettit, the church's outreach missions pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Little Pine Cemetery, C.R. 19, Goshen.
