Obituary

Michelle A. Whitmyer, 70, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at 8:54 p.m. at Greenleaf Health Campus in Elkhart, following an extended illness. Though her health had grown fragile, Michelle's heart remained strong, filled with the love she held for her family and the joy she found in life's simple, beautiful moments.

She was born on May 17, 1955, in Elkhart to the late John L. and Rosalind M. (Gause) Varanelli, who taught her the values of kindness, hard work, and family devotion that she carried throughout her life.

Michelle is lovingly survived by her sons, Ryan P. and Jason W. Whitmyer, both of Elkhart; her brother John R. "Little John" (Linda) Varanelli of Elkhart; her sister Diane Weirich of Indianapolis; and several cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought light and laughter to her days.

A woman of creativity and care, Michelle spent much of her life as a licensed, self-employed hairstylist and florist, two professions that reflected her gift for making the world a little brighter and more beautiful. Whether it was a fresh bouquet or a new hairstyle, she had a way of helping others feel special and seen.

Michelle's greatest joy, however, came from her family. She especially adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, finding endless delight in baking Christmas cookies with them and showering them with affection. Her kitchen was a place of warmth, laughter, and the sweet aroma of cookies made with love.

She attended Trinity Lutheran Church whenever she could and held her faith close to her heart. A true Cubbies and Notre Dame fan, Michelle loved cheering on her teams and never missed an episode of NCIS or Wheel of Fortune. She also had a soft spot for giraffes, spending quiet moments watching them on live video feeds, finding a sense of peace and wonder in their graceful beauty.

In keeping with Michelle's wishes, cremation has taken place, and no formal services are planned. Her family takes comfort in knowing she is at peace, surrounded by the eternal love of her Heavenly Father and reunited with those who went before her.

Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart have been entrusted with her arrangements.

Those who knew Michelle will remember her for her warmth, her laughter, her generous spirit, and the way she made ordinary moments feel special. Her love remains a lasting gift in the hearts of those she touched.
