Michele Lee
Merryman - Staples
June 19, 1964 – February 8, 2026
Michele Lee Merryman-Staples, 61, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully at
Eastlake Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a disability that spanned
many years.
Born on June 19, 1964, in Zillah, Washington, to the late Spencer L. and Linda L.
(Nice) Merryman, Michele began her life in the wide-open beauty of the Pacific
Northwest — a place of vineyards, sunshine, and close-knit community. Though
life would later bring unexpected challenges, those who knew her understood
that Michele carried within her a quiet resilience that shaped her journey.
For many years, Michele lived with a disability that required strength, patience,
and courage. Yet her life could not be defined by limitations. It was defined by
endurance. By persistence. By the simple but powerful grace of continuing
forward, day by day.
Before her health declined, Michele worked in food and hospitality service — a
field that speaks to her willingness to serve others. Hospitality is more than an
occupation; it is an act of welcome. It requires warmth, attentiveness, and a heart
inclined toward care. In her own way, Michele contributed to the comfort and
well-being of those she encountered.
She is survived by her brother, Michael “Mike” (Cyndi) Merryman of Othello,
Washington, whose bond with his sister spanned a lifetime and miles of distance.
She also leaves behind her devoted caregiver and close friend, Lisa J. Douglas of
Elkhart, whose presence in Michele’s later years was a steady source of
companionship and support.
Though Michele’s path was not always easy, it was her path — uniquely hers —
and it was lived with a quiet dignity that deserves remembrance. In accordance
with her wishes, cremation will take place, and she will return to her brother Mike
in Othello, Washington, bringing her journey full circle to the place where it
began.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Billings Funeral Home and Cremation
Services of Elkhart.
In honoring Michele’s life, we remember that significance is not measured by
headlines or accolades, but by endurance, relationships, and the quiet strength to
face each day as it comes.
