Obituary
MISHAWAKA — Michael Yaciw, 89, of Mishawaka and formerly of Elkhart, passed away Jan. 1, at Sprenger Healthcare in Mishawaka.
Mike "Mr. Briteway" was born Nov. 3, 1925, in Lorain, Ohio, to the late Peter Y. and Helen (Makar) Yaciw.
Mike is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Mary Louise (Wolford), whom he married June 29, 1989, in Plymouth. Also surviving are his children, Brent Yaciw, Randy Yaciw and wife Debra, Mitchel Yaciw, Belann Bennett and husband Ken, Joe Yaciw and wife Jennifer, Donna Anderson, Ross Wolford, Jane Whiteman and husband David, and Dale Wolford and wife Tina; a sister, Delores Bohn; grandchildren Dustin Yaciw, Randy Yaciw Jr., Melissa Yaciw, Jason Yaciw, Jennifer Bennett, Chris Bennett, Terri Putnum, Jessica Yaciw, Jordan Yaciw, Olivia Yaciw, Amy Bozman, Clint Wolford, Tori Lipsky, Todd Wolford, Aaron Wolford, Laurie Casillas, Daphne Behan, Adam Frenger, Tony Frenger, Clark Whiteman, Tom Matherne, Carol Wylie and Lori Falgot; his great-grandchildren, Aubrie Millard, Cameron Millard, Leah Yaciw, Priya Yaciw, Jacob Yaciw and Abraham Putnum; 25 great-step-grandchildren; 17 great-great-step-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-step-grandchild.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 10 siblings.
Mike served in the U.S Army during World War II. He moved his family to South Bend in 1962 to open and manage Briteway Sales on the south side of South Bend. He stayed there until its closing in 1987, when he retired. After that, Mike and Mary could be seen all over South Bend and other small towns walking for exercise and meeting folks.
He passed with most of his family at his bedside, happy and content, having lived a full life.
Per Mike's wishes, cremation has taken place. Burial will be at a later date in Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka, with military honors.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Elkhart County.
Arrangements are under the care of Altera Cremation Services and Billings Funeral Home.
