Nov. 19, 1957 - March 15, 2012
ELKHART — Michael Jack Hartzell, 54, of Elkhart, passed away Thursday morning, March 15, 2012, at Elkhart Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family.
Michael was born Nov. 19, 1957, in Madison, W.Va., to Jack and Peggy (Seafler) Hartzell.
Mike was preceded in death by his father, Jack Hartzell, as well as his paternal and maternal grandparents.
Surviving are his son, Christopher Hartzell of Elkhart; mother Peggy Seafler (Bob Rose) of Elkhart; a brother, Chuck (Liz) Hartzell of Bristol; sister Vicki Hartzell of South Bend; two nephews, Justin Jones of South Bend and Jonah Jones of Elkhart; and niece Hannah Hartzell of Bristol. Mike also was loved by many extended family and friends who will miss him.
After a birth defect that caused Mike to become a quadriplegic at the age of 32, he was able to return to the job he loved at Elkhart Products in production and eventually 2nd shift supervisor. He enjoyed 32 years of service. He was most thankful to his co-workers for their help and generosity in keeping him independent by purchasing a special use van for him to use to come to work in.
He was an avid NASCAR fan, with Dale Sr. being his favorite. He also passed along his love for fishing to his son Chris, and was a master euchre player.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2012, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Services to celebrate Mike's life will begin at 3 p.m. His uncles, Deacon Ronnie Hainor and Lewis Hainor will officiate. In keeping with Mike's wishes, cremation has taken place at Altera Cremation Service.
Mike's family wishes to thank Dr. Jin and his wonderful staff and the St. Joseph's Visiting Nurses for the care and guidance they showed to Mike and his family.
