ELKHART — Merle G. Shetler, 89, of Elkhart, passed to his eternal rest Sunday, Oct. 25, at Greenleaf Health Campus, with family by his side.
Merle was born Sept. 4, 1926, in Blanden, Iowa, the son of the late George W. and Maude Mae (Miller) Shetler.
He married the former Katherine B. Steider on Feb. 10, 1946, in Shickley, Neb. They lived in Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Florida and finally Indiana.
Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Katherine; their children, Stanley Shetler and wife Carolyn of Goshen, Charles Shetler and wife Elizabeth of Bloomington, Janet Ress and husband Michael of Elkhart, Theresa Foy and husband Edward of Elkhart, James Shetler and wife Laurinda of Austin, Texas, and Mary Smith and husband Christopher of Fayetteville, Ga.; 19 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. A brother, Marlyn (Dorie) Shetler of Pennsylvania, and three sisters, Alice Schrock of Indiana, MaryLou Williams of Arizona and Myra Randolph of Florida, survive as well.
Preceding him in death were a grandson, Andrew Smith, and brothers Maynard, John and Rollin Shetler.
Merle had various jobs throughout his life. Farming was his passion. He drove a truck and also worked as a press operator for five years at Swartzendruber Hardwood Creations in Goshen. Merle was active in church throughout his life.
His family and friends will miss his love, kindness, humor and his deep faith in Jesus.
In keeping with Merle's wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial services are pending. Burial of his cremated remains will be at a later date in Little Pine Cemetery in Goshen.
Arrangements for Merle are under the care of Billings Funeral Home in Elkhart.
