ELKHART -- Merle A. Moir, 87, of Elkhart, passed away at IU Health Goshen Hospital on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, after an extended illness.

Merle was born Nov. 25, 1923, in Spokane, Wash. On March 7, 1973, he married Joanne (Burns) Moir in Elkhart.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughters, Jean Ramsey of Elkhart and Melissa McGehee of Wilmington, N.C.; son William Burns of Elkhart; three grandchildren, Robin Hill of Elkhart, Michael Moir of Morehead City, N.C., and Aaron Grant of Wilmington; and great-granddaughter Brianna Moir of Morehead City.

Merle served a combined total of 17 years in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy. He served in the Navy during World War II. He was employed as a welder and worked for Elkhart Bridge and Iron for nearly 25 years before retiring in 1989 while working at St. Joseph Valley Steel. He formerly attended Calvary Assembly of God Church.

Merle will be remembered for spending his entire life helping others and was the co-founder of a halfway house in Elkhart.

Private graveside services will be held at Olive Cemetery at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care.

Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
