ELKHART — Melissa Kay (Cubbernuss) Poff, 42, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully following a courageous battle with cancer at the Elkhart General Hospital in Elkhart at 11:35 p.m. Monday, June 6.
She was born Aug. 16, 1973, in Goshen, to the late George F. Cubbernuss and Judith K. (Taylor) Freeby, who survives her at home.
She was also preceded in death by her stepfather, Keith Freeby.
Along with her mother, Melissa is survived by her brother, Chris (Dawn) Cubbernuss of Cassopolis, Mich.
A memorial celebration of Melissa's life will take place at 4 p.m. On Tuesday, Aug. 16, at the River Oaks Community Church, 58020 C.R. 115, Goshen. Pastor Scott Tilley will officiate and friends will be received by the family immediately following the service.
A 1991 graduate of Elkhart Central High School, Melissa dedicated her life to God, family, friends and young people at an early age. She had worked several years locally in advertising sales, but she notably enjoyed the time spent and friendships made while working for Martin's Supermarkets in Elkhart.
She was a devout member of the River Oaks family, and belonged to the Wednesday night bible study group. She also volunteered at God's Kitchen in downtown Elkhart and with Big Sisters. Because of her gracious interactions with others, Melissa was able to touch the lives of innumerable people and her smile and laughter lit up every room and face that came in contact with her. Her empathy, love and warm touch was a comfort to anyone lucky enough to have made her acquaintance. Through her life, she taught the invaluable lesson of compassion and unconditional love. Melissa's greatest virtue was humility, for she never knew the greatness of the impact she had on others.
Memorial donations may be given to the church.
