He was born June 28, 1934, in Falkville, Ala., to Duard and Pearl (Price) Holmes. He married Natalie J. Misener on Oct. 2, 1954, in Elkhart. She died Oct. 27, 2002, in Elkhart.
He is survived by two sons, Max P. (Lili) Holmes II of Elkhart and James (Lori) Holmes of Edwardsburg; two daughters, Pam (Roger) White and Tina Hall, both of Elkhart; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Thurman Holmes; and one sister, Betty Mae Holmes.
Friends may call one hour prior to the 3 p.m. Monday service at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Victor Mikev will officiate and burial will take place in Sugar Grove Cemetery.
Mr. Holmes was employed for 20 years as a sheet-metal worker and machinist at Bock Industries. He retired from T & M Rubber in Goshen and started and operated a band called "Shilo's" for more than 20 years.
