Obituary

Ms. Maryann Engle, 78, of Elkhart, Indiana, passed away peacefully following an extended illness at Riverside Village in Elkhart on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 1:10 a.m.

Born in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, on January 7, 1948, Maryann entered the world with a determined spirit that would remain one of her defining traits throughout her life. She was the daughter of the late Clifford H. and Arbutus L. (Kemp) Carr. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Christie LaBar; and by her brother, Rodney “Rod” Carr.

Maryann is survived by two daughters, and a son, along with her former spouse, Frank Engle, a life companion through the years. She also leaves behind special cousins, longtime friends, and her beloved cat, Molly, who is currently adjusting to life without her favorite human while receiving loving care at Frank’s home.

In accordance with Maryann’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Burial will follow in the near future at Rice Cemetery in Elkhart. Billings Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Elkhart has been assisting the family.

Maryann devoted much of her working life to caring for others. She spent many years as a Certified Nursing Assistant and home healthcare provider. She also dedicated more than a decade of service to Whitehall Laboratories, where she made many lifetime friends.

Maryann was a gifted and prolific crafter whose talents seemed to know no boundaries. Sewing, cross-stitch, crochet, stained glass work, and countless other creative projects filled her home and her days. Yet among all her artistic pursuits, quilting occupied a place all its own. Each stitch represented her patience, creativity, and dedication to doing things well.

Her home was often filled with the familiar sounds of HGTV, her favorite comfort channel. She also found satisfaction in tending her flower gardens, nurturing colorful blooms that brightened her surroundings and reflected her appreciation for simple beauty. During football season, however, tranquility often gave way to spirited enthusiasm as she faithfully cheered for the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. Win or lose, she remained a loyal fan through every season.

Memorial contributions may be made in Maryann's memory to the Humane Society of one's choice, honoring her lifelong affection for animals and the beloved companions who brought her comfort, companionship, and unconditional love throughout the years.
