ELKHART - Maryan L. Bentz, 97, residing in Elkhart, passed to her rest on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at Woodland Manor. She was born in Elkhart on March 30, 1919 to the late Frederic E. and Edna (Thunander) Helser. Maryan married John D. Bentz on June 16, 1940 in Elkhart; he died July 10, 1980.
Surviving are a son, Jon D. (Catherine) Bentz of Elkhart; a grandson, Brant Bentz of Indianapolis; two step-grandchildren, Kevin (Michelle) Wells of Bristol; and Reagan Wells (Brian) Nauheim of Portland, Oregon; three great grandchildren and five step-grandchildren. In addition, Maryan is survived by three nieces, including Judy (Jeff) Landrum of Bristol, and several great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband John, she was preceded in death by infant twin sons, sister Margaret (Nelson) Sorg and three brothers, Francis Helser, Frederic Wayne Helser and Harold "Ace" Helser.
A graduate of Elkhart High School, Maryan was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She volunteered for many years with Meals on Wheels, along with her good friend Nancy (Tom) Holt, now deceased.
A service celebrating Maryan's life will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 5 with visitation one hour prior at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. Elkhart. Pastor Gary Sheets will officiate. In honoring her wishes, cremation has taken place. She will be laid to rest next to her husband John at Rice Cemetery prior to Thursday's service.
