ELKHART — Mary R. Stewart, 86, of Elkhart, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at Cardinal Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in South Bend.
She was born April 24, 1925, to Roscoe R. and Erma A. (Mullett) Hartman. In April 1968, she married the late Vernon L. Stewart. He passed away March 28, 1989.
Survivors include a son, Richard Weesner, and two daughters, Sue Berkey and Ruth Hanson, all of Elkhart; three brothers, Russell T. Hartman and Dale (Marie) Hartman, both of Elkhart, and Wayne (Lu) Hartman of Goshen; sister Evelyn Dunker of Elkhart; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Roscoe Jr. and Robert Hartman Sr.; sister Erma Floor; and grandson George A. Hanson Jr.
Mary was employed with LE Johnson Products for more than 12 years prior to her retirement in 1985. She was a member of UAW Local 428, a Girl Scout leader and Sunday school teacher. Mary enjoyed cooking for her family, crocheting, knitting and making all types of crafts.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the 6 p.m. memorial service Monday, March 5, 2012, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Pastor Gary Sheets will officiate.
