ELKHART -- Mary B. Slabaugh, 99, of Elkhart, died at 10 p.m. Tuesday (June 16, 2009) in Riverside Village in Elkhart.
She was born Oct. 28, 1909, in Elkhart to Edward C. and Pauline (Shaw) Borneman. On April 9, 1944, she married C. Whitney Slabaugh in Elkhart. He died March 17, 1998.
She is survived by two sons, C. Whitney Slabaugh Jr. of Minnesota and Carl L. (Jane) Slabaugh of Elkhart; and two stepgrandsons. One brother, Edward Borneman Jr., and one sister, Marg Stringfellow, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Slabaugh was a homemaker and worked at First National Bank in Elkhart during World War II. She graduated in 1927 from Elkhart High School and attended Ward Belmont in Nashville, Tenn. She was a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church and a member of Tri Kappa and St. John's Episcopal Church Women. Her former memberships include the Four Arts Club and St. John's Altar Guild. She had volunteered with Elkhart General Hospital and Meals on Wheels.
Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. John's Episcopal Church, 226 W. Lexington Ave., Elkhart, with visitation one-half hour prior to the service. The Revs. Terri Peterson and Richard A. Kallenburg will officiate. Graveside services will follow in Rice Cemetery in Elkhart.
