ELKHART — Mary Ann Phipps, 69, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully after an extended illness at 2:35 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, surrounded by her family and pets in her home.
She was born April 7, 1943, to the late Jess and Catherine Chaffin in Portsmith, Ohio.
She later married Danny M. Phipps on Aug. 17, 1973, in Portsmith. He survives at home in Elkhart.
Also surviving are her daughter, Tracy Phipps of Elkhart; sons Michael (Debbie) Harris and Marvin (Tracy) Harris of Circleville, Ohio, Jay Dee Harris and Leslie (Brenda) Harris of Stoutsville, Ohio, and William "Jesse" (Kelly) Phipps of Elkhart; a brother, Paul Chaffin of Circleville; sisters Sue Chaffin of Circleville and Janet Sexton of Elkhart; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by a son, Richard "Rick" Harris, and brothers William "Bill" and James "Jim" Chaffin.
A celebration of Mary's life will begin at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13, 2012, at Billings Funeral Home in Elkhart, followed by a funeral at 4 p.m. Chaplain Joe Emmerth of Southern Care Hospice will officiate.
In accordance with her wishes, Mary will then be cremated and returned to Ohio.
Mary was a homemaker, but worked for several years at Accra-Pac (now KIK Industries) and Morgan Drive-Away, both in Elkhart.
She enjoyed cooking, sewing, shopping, gardening and spending time with her three dogs. She also collected cookbooks, coins and angels.
A kind and loving lady, Mary will always be remembered for her love for her family, friends and pets.
She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
