ELKHART -- Mary O. Mitchell, 72, of Elkhart, passed away Saturday (Feb. 5, 2011) in Elkhart General Hospital.
She was born in Gloster, Miss., on April 1, 1938, to George Williams and Lubertha (VanNorman) Williams.
She is survived by her daughter, Marla N. Mitchell of Elkhart; granddaughter LaKenia Warren of Osceola; and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a brother, Moyese (Dora) Williams of Houston; sisters Georgia Marie Akins of South Bend and Lois (Brent) Curry of Elkhart; her mother, Winnie Williams of Elkhart; and former husband Marvin (Chaquitta) Mitchell of Cassopolis, Mich. She was preceded in death by her sons, Marvin J. Mitchell Jr. and Kevin Mitchell; sister Ethel Carter; and brothers John Henry Williams and Anthony Frazier.
Mary retired from Bethphage Community Services as a caregiver. She had attended St. James AME Church. Mary was an avid reader and enjoyed crocheting, sewing and crossword puzzles.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11, 2011, at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, where friends may call beginning at 10 a.m. The Rev. McNeal Stewart III, pastor of Canaan Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Rice Cemetery.
