Obituary

ELKHART — Mary J. Makela, 71, of Elkhart, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 25 at Elkhart General Hospital.

Mary was born on Feb. 22, 1945, in Creston-Edmond, IL to August and Lillian (Askland) Hintzsche.

Mary married Robert M. Makela on Jan. 25, 1971, in Elkhart.


Surviving is her husband of 45 years, Robert M. Makela; son, John T. Makela of Elkhart; two brothers, John Hintzsche of Iowa and Charles Hintzsche of Wis. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, sister Francis (Mickley) Davidson and a brother Paul Mickley.

Mary graduated from Rochelle (IL) High School and attended the University of Iowa.

In her youth, she was a 13-year member of the National Champion Marilyn's Majorette's Corp of 12.

Mary was a former den mother and pack leader for Pack 750 in Cub Scouts.

She also worked for several years as a switchboard operator for O.S.M.C Sports Medicine Center in Elkhart.

Mary was an 8-year cancer survivor and supported others during this time.

She was great with people and animals. Mary loved writing poems and sending them to friends and families for retirements and birthdays.

Mary was a loving wife and mother, she will be missed.

A gathering of family and friends will be held from 4 fo 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2016 at the Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St. Elkhart.

In honoring Mary's wishes, cremation will follow, with burial at a later date.
