ELKHART — Mary Kathryn "Kay" South, 89, of Elkhart, passed to her rest Wednesday, Dec. 14, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Kay was born at home Nov. 26, 1927, in Findlay, Ohio, to the late Gale B. and Mary Lavone (Kramer) Clymer.
Her family later moved to Cleveland where she attended grade school, and then to Columbus, and briefly in Troy, Ohio.
After graduation from Columbus North High School, she enrolled in nursing school and later studied to be an x-ray technician at White Cross Hospital.
Kay began her career at Children's Nationwide Hospital in Columbus.
In 1949, she met who would become the love of her life, Dale South Jr. on a blind date.
They eventually moved to Elkhart in 1968 with their three loving children.
Kay is survived by her husband of 65 years, Dr. Dale R. South Jr.; daughter Susan D. South of Elkhart; son Daniel E. (Sandra) South of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews survive as well.
She was preceded in death by her son, Mark E. South in 2007 and a sister, Josephine "Jo" Raidiger.
Kay was very active in the community and was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Elkhart, where she served as a member of the Silent Samaritans.
Kay also served as a volunteer at Beardsley Elementary School, teaching English as a second language to the children.
She also was a member of the Four Arts Club, Eastern Star, antique Study Club, Stephens Ministries, the court de serf (Heart of the Elk) and Elkhart General Auxiliary.
In addition to her family and many volunteer activities, she also enjoyed singing and was known to have a wonderful soprano voice.
Services celebrating Kay's life will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 16, at the First Presbyterian Church, 200 E. Beardsley Ave., Elkhart.
Pastor Rebecca Kuiken will officiate.
Kay's family will receive friends beginning one hour prior.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place, with burial in the church's Memorial Garden at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly request memorials in Kay's name to the Center for Healing and Hope, 902 S. Main St. Goshen, IN 46526.
