ELKHART -- Mary E. Hawkins, 88, of Elkhart, passed away Friday morning, Sept. 2, 2011, after an extended illness at Elkhart General Hospital.
Mary was born on Nov. 5, 1922, in Dolan. She married Carl V. Hawkins on May 14, 1941, in Bloomington.
Surviving are her husband, Carl V. Hawkins of Elkhart; son Carl R. (June) Hawkins of Melbourne, Fla.; and her daughter, Mary (James) Hostetter of Elkhart.
Mary had eight grandchildren, several great- and great-great-grandchildren, three sisters and a brother survive as well. Mary retired from Bloomington Hospital, where she worked as a surgical technician for more than 40 years. She enjoyed sewing, making quilts, doing embroidery and fishing.
Mary attended Elkhart Church of God. She was a very caring and giving person, and will be greatly missed by her loving family.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart. Friends may also call one hour prior to the 11 a.m. Wednesday funeral service at Elkhart Church of God, 28082 C.R. 4, Elkhart. Pastor B.J. Bishop will officiate. Burial will follow in Adamsville Cemetery.
